In one of my recent discussions with some friends, one who has been on missionary work outside the country, one who works for a research HIV/AIDS organization in the country and a few others, HIV/AIDS came up in our discussion. And i went home wondering why as verbal as we have tried to be about HIV/AIDS, it is still very rampant within our youth especially. As we keep reading articles in our newspapers about youth activities that keep endangering our health, i keep wondering is it that we just don't care or we are too engrossed in fitting in that we end up acting irresponsible.

One of the things i know for sure, the stigma is still with us. We might think a lot has been said about HIV/AIDS in our country but not enough is being done. As a society we are still not ready to discuss with our friends and family's about protective ways of intimacy. If we cannot talk to our spouses or girl/boy friends about the use of condoms, then there is a problem and we are still a long way from finishing the stigma in our country. Sex is still viewed as sacred in most parts of this country but the way our world is going now, very few youth get to marriage leave alone 18 while still virgins. For this reason we have to make sex an open topic from as young as 12 year olds and discuss the need of protective sex.

We cant keep treating sex as a marriage counseling topic anymore as it is so with us, deep, ingrained in our society wholly. I think discussing sex is the first way to curb the HIV/AIDS stigma as well as reduce the chances of infection within our society. Discuss it with your friends openly, they might have experiences that will come in handy or just learn from them.

As a society, use of condoms is now becoming verbal but our youth have to be educated more on all other contraceptive methods that we can protect ourselves with. If we make this discussions more verbal and open, we might actually get a step ahead in trying to protect our youth against HIV/AIDS as well as unwanted pregnancy (which is a topic for another day). Have a verbal day wont you.
